Digital Scrapper Scraplift Challenge

with 18 Comments

We’ve got a new Digital Scrapper Challenge for you! Today’s challenge is a Scraplift Challenge. We’re using this beautiful layout from Lisa Rose:

I just love the composition of this layout, and it makes a great 8.5 x 11 page. For the lift I converted it to a 12×12 layout using the October 2010 Premier kit, “Thankfully” by Krystal Hartley.

Take a look at my page I created by scraplifting Lisa Rose’s page here:

by Andrea Graves

If you’re running short on photos, try using the same photo to fill up more than one square, like I did. The two squares filled with just pumpkins are actually taken from one photo. I used the left half of the photo in one square and the right half in another square.

Also, if your photos won’t fit in one square, try putting the same photo in two squares. I have a photo of my son and me that takes up two squares in the bottom left corner. Just some ideas!

What can you do to lift these pages and make them your own? We’d love to see! The winner will receive a $10 gift certificate to the Digital Scrapper Store!

Here’s how you enter:

  1. There is an optional template of the 12 squares on the page to download here.
  2. Create a scraplift of the above layouts using whatever kit you love.
  3. Upload your page to our Challenge Gallery.
  4. All participants will receive a lovely posting bonus.

This challenge is open for 2 weeks. It will officially be closed to new entries on the night of October 31st, 2010 at midnight (Pacific Time.)

We will announce the winner here on the Digital Scrapper Blog, on our Facebook page, and in our forum within a week of the challenge end date. We can’t wait to see what you come up with! Good luck! 🙂

I am not sure about what kit to use. If I use a kit a downloaded from someones store do I need to give credit on who’s kit I used?

When I use the link to upload, I get to the forum page. I do not see a way to upload though … I am not familiar with how forums and blogs work, so it’s not intuitive for me . Please help.
    Thanks

I am no expert, but to clip one photo to 2 squares:
    – select the two squares in the layers palette (using Ctrl and select to select them both)
    – right click on the selected squares in the layers palette
    – select Merge layers
Now you have one clipping mask from two squares
This is not a reversible process, so if you don’t like it, step up in your History bar to undo it.

These would be the instructions for Photoshop; I am not sure how it would differ for Elements.
Good luck (and I hope this is clear and correct. :-))

Thanks, Diane! That’s totally correct, thanks for offering your help! Another way to do it, is to first place the photo where you think you want it and size it to fit into the squares. Then copy the photo and use the clipping mask (press control G) to put it into each layer. A little hint if you do it this way, link your two photos before doing the clipping mask – that way, when you adjust the photos to fit just right, your two photos will be correctly aligned when you use the clipping mask. I hope that helps! 🙂

I like this challenge as well and will give it a whirl! Question though…..how do you clip one photo to 2 squares (as you did with the pix of you and your son)??

    Thanks!

I’m going to try this and need a little hint as to how you replace the rounded squares with photos. I know I’ve seen a tutorial on this but looked for it for an hour and thought I would ask for a hint from the group. thanks for your collective knowledge.

      Hi Maggie,

To fill the squares with your photos or papers you need to use a clipping mask (control G). We have some tutorials that explain it really well here: http://www.scrappersguide.com/tag/clipping-mask/
      I hope that helps! 🙂

I’m back for the second try! I finished the last one a day before the deadline, but missed the deadline due to problems uploading. Finally uploaded it to the October Premier Gallery.

I really, really enjoyed the challenge because it gave me the incentive to keep working on it until it was finished!

Thank you so much, Andrea, for the opportunity. It is FUN!

i’m still new to the digital scrapbooking world and to photoshop. can you explain a little better what you mean by “scraplift”

Yes. Scraplift means to copy the layout but change it just enough to make it your own. By copy I mean the design perspective of the layout. You customize the content of your “lift” but just use the 12 squares design. There is a template you can download in this blog post that has the 12 squares on it to give you something to start off with. You can alter that template to fit your needs. Also, take a look at the challenge gallery (link is above) to see how some other people have done this challenge. I hope that helps! 🙂

OK, got one done, and even made my own template 🙂 What attracted me was the rounded corner photo masks…I love using these.
Thanks for the challenge…it was just what I needed on a Monday 🙂

P.S. Once you download the template, it shows up as little words, but open it up in Photoshop or Photoshop Elements and it will work just fine.

I’ve never done a scraplift before…I wonder how literal it should or should not be. I’ll give it a try!
