Quick Tip—Multiply Blend Mode

Quick Tip—Multiply
by Jen White

Wood embellishments are all the rage right now. I’m seeing them in my local craft stores and in the digital kits of designers I follow. One great perk to going digital with your scrapbooking is that the wood stain on these embellishments can be easily altered. Let me show you what I mean.

Here are two versions of a star from Stories: 365 by Kristin Cronin-Barrow. The one on the left is in its original form. The star on the right has been given a slightly darker stain simply by adding a Blend Mode adjustment in Adobe Photoshop or Photoshop Elements.

Here’s how to achieve this look:

• Open an embellishment, create a duplicate, and then close the original.
• Press Ctrl J (Mac: Cmd J). You should now have two identical layers in the Layers panel.
• Change the Blend Mode (in the Layers panel) of the top layer to Multiply.

Too much or too little? No problem.

• To make the stain a little lighter: In the Layers panel, lower the Opacity of the top layer.
• To make the stain darker still: Press Ctrl J (Mac: Cmd J) to create a copy of the top layer.

Here is a snip of my scrapbook page before applying this tip:

And here is the same snip after applying several Multiply layers to the wooden tree. I think it looks MUCH warmer and inviting.

Me, too! I’ve taken lots of DS classes and benefited from all of them. I really enjoyed the Blending class.

I took the Art of Blending class in 2014–what a blast! The lessons are fun, and easy to understand and do, producing wonderful images. It made me look at my images in a new way, as I tried to anticipate which ones would most benefit from blending. And it was so cool to view other people’s transformations in the gallery. I recommend this class to everyone!
