Step One: Prepare the Workspace

Note: This download contains the video, manual, quick pages, and TOU.

  • Unzip the folder (qt-Color-Split-Title-download).
  • Open the card-thankful-FRONT-DS.jpg file (File > Open) located in the download folder.

Step Two: Add the Type

  • Get the Horizontal Type tool.
  • In the Tool Options, open the Font Picker and choose League Spartan Bold (or a similar bold, san serif font). Set the Size to 72 and click on the Center Alignment icon.
NOTE: The League Spartan font can be found for free at FontSquirrel.com.

  • Photoshop Elements Only: In the Tool Options, set the Leading to Auto and the Tracking to 0. Click on the Color Chip and then click on the Color Wheel icon to open the Color Picker. In the Color Picker, enter Hex # d5832d. Click OK to close the Color Picker.
  • Adobe Photoshop Only: In the Tool Options, click on the Color Chip to open the Color Picker. In the Color Picker, enter Hex # d5832d. Click OK to close the Color Picker. In the Character panel (Window > Character), set the Leading to Auto and the Tracking to 0. Close the Character panel.

  • On the document, click once in the middle to place the cursor.
  • Type the word, “THANKFUL” in all caps, then click the checkmark to commit.
  • Get the Move tool.
  • Press Ctrl A (Mac: Cmd A) to select the entire document.
  • In the Tool Options, click on the Align Vertical Centers icon and the Align Horizontal Centers icon.
  • Press Ctrl D (Mac: Cmd D) to deselect.

Step Three: Create the Two Tone Effect

  • Click on the Foreground Color Chip to open the Color Picker.
  • In the Color Picker, enter Hex # eec47c and click OK.
  • In the Layers panel, click on the Create a New Fill or Adjustment Layer icon and choose Solid Color.
  • In the dialog box, click OK.
  • In the Menu Bar, choose Layer > Create Clipping Mask.

  • Get the Rectangular Marquee tool.
  • In the Tool Options, click on the New Selection icon and check Anti-aliasing. Set the Feather to 0 and the Aspect to Fixed Size. (PS: Set the Style to Fixed Size.) Enter and width of 7 inches and a height of 2.5 inches.
  • On the document, click and drag the selection all the way to top of the document.
  • In the Layers panel, click on the layer mask of the Color Fill layer to activate it.

NOTE: If your adjustment layer does not have a layer mask, click on the Add Layer Mask icon in the Layers panel.

  • The Foreground Color Chip should be black. If it isn’t, press the letter X to switch it to black.
  • Press Alt Backspace (Mac: Opt Delete) to fill the selection with black. This will reveal the two tone title.
  • Press Ctrl D (Mac: Cmd D) to deselect.

Step Four: Add More Title and Save

  • (Optional) Add additional words to the title.
  • Save your card (File > Save As) as a layered PSD file with a unique name.

  • Close the original document without saving.
  • (Optional) Use the card-thankful-INSIDE-DS.jpg file in the download folder to create the inside (or back side) of a card.
