AdoramaPix Photo Book from Text Messages

with 71 Comments

Do you ever look at a photo and get a flash of inspiration?

Caribou River

When my son texted me this pano photo of his road trip through Canada to Alaska, I had an instant vision for a surprise photo book—using his text messages and photos for the content and journaling.

I  right clicked on each photo attachment and chose an option to save. Then I copied and pasted my son’s text message into a document to use for dates and journaling.

It helped that his return would coincide with his birthday.

What better excuse for a gift book than a birthday, right?

FYI: I did consult with my son shortly before his birthday to make sure I had all the information correct and that he was pleased with the choice of photos and layout of the book. It was still a surprise, and his input and corrections were valuable.

My motto: If I have to choose between surprise and getting the details right, I’ll side with the details every time!

Choosing an Online Book Printer

I knew instantly that this book had to be done by AdoramaPix.

Why? Because it was going to be a really special book.

It would contain lots of eye-popping scenery perfect for stretching seamlessly across two pages, so I definitely wanted a lay flat binding.

Meziadin Lake Provincial Park

Here’s a better view of the lay-flat spine.

Lay Flat Spine

I also wanted excellent quality and color.

Yup. It had to be AdoramaPix.

Alaska Adventure book

I’m fairly new to AdoramaPix. My first project, a heritage book, was a more traditional scrapbook. I’d already finished designing it before I was introduced to AdoramaPix.

When I decided to use AdoramaPix, I did alter a couple of the heritage pages to take advantage of the lay-flat binding, but the Alaska Adventure book was the first time I used the lay-flat feature as part of my design from the very start and on almost every spread.

I love designing that way!

I love the freedom to place photos across the center without worrying about losing part of the photo.

Scrapbooking Elements

The heritage album I made for my mother was a traditional scrapbook in every way.

The Alaska Adventure album was for my son, so I kept it spare and simple in more of a “photo book” style, but I did add some scrapbooking touches:

I used a layer style photo edge that was slightly grayer than the white background to give the photos a finished look. The layer style also had a very small drop shadow.

Occasionally I added scrapbooking elements to my pages. Here I used a banner with word art.

I placed an American flag on the page that told about my son crossing the U.S./Canadian border into Hyder, Alaska.

I also selected road signs from photos to use as elements. The fact that there are fewer elements makes them all the more appealing when you see one.

signs selected from photos

Type is also a design element. I kept the type the same throughout the book, using Abadi Mt Condensed Light Regular in different sizes for the titles, dates, and journaling.

Repeating design elements like the photo edge layer style and consistent type treatment makes your book feel professional and cohesive.

Printing My Book

AdoramaPix has lots of great book sizes to choose from. I used the 10 x 10 inch size for the first time ever, and it was perfect!

I’ll definitely use that size again.

Here’s the printed book standing up. It had 74 pages. The paper is slightly thicker than routine photo books, which makes for a sturdy and glossy look.

Did My Son Like It?

Did he like it?! He loved it!

For years to come he can relive his grand adventure every time he opens this photo book. They’re his pictures and his stories.

Stories to pass down to his kids and grandkids.

And to think it all came from text messages.

The story that is begging to be told is our summer vacation with our 9 year old grandson. We took him on a 4,000 mile road trip through the Grand Tetons,Yellowstone and then on up to the Pacific Northwest where we worked my brother and sister-in-laws lavender farm. He was a pure joy to be with and we learned so much.

My mom passed away in September. I made a slideshow to show at her Celebration of Life service (and previously made slideshows for her 75th and 80th birthdays), and as I was looking for photos, I found several that I had never seen before. It would be nice to make a book honouring Mom for my brother, sister, and me.

I seem to have numerous ideas for photo books: one for my mother who is 95 years old; one for my oldest grandson who will graduate from high school in May 2016; one for my husband to detail photos of the houses we have lived in, including floor plans, photos of the inside of each home; photos of my husband and me and our 47 years of marriage; a book for my grandchildren so they can see that Grandma and Grandpa were young once, and even their mother and father were young once, too; photos of the cats we have had. But my highest priority is the book for my 95 year old mother.I want to create a book for her, a kind of “This is your life” book. Over the years, she has told me stories about her life. I want to include how she met my dad, her years of teaching, her hobbies. I would include those stories, plus stories and photos of her 3 children, 5 grandchildren, and 10 great grandchildren. Thank you for the chance to win a free photo book!

“Begging to be told…” That is a good question. I love the book you made for your son. It is beautiful. I recently made a book for my daughter and son-in-law about their trip to Alaska, and about ten few years back I made a family-history book. I recently made my first 10X10 Adorama book, and I was instantly in love. I have used quite a few different photo-book makers, and I had two at the top of my list; however, they got bumped way down when I got my Adorama book. It is beautiful from cover to cover, and the quality is incredible. For an special book, I will always use Adorama from now on. “Begging to be tol…” I would like to redo some of the family-history book I made; however, in the time I made it, I was using PSP and I no longer have the originals. Even though my mom had passed away, I was fortunate that she left behind many stories and memories from her childhood. I would still like to push myself to redo it and print it as a 10X10 beautiful Adorama book. And whether I win or not, when I do remake it, I would like to use Adorama when I finally do remake the book.
