AdoramaPix.com is a company that prints, among other things, photos, scrapbook pages, and entire photo albums. Since we know that many of you are interested in learning about various printing options, we agreed to try them out and write a review of our experience. Jen White, Susie Roberts, and Linda Sattgast each had something printed with AdoramaPix. In full disclosure, AdoramaPix provided the product free for us in exchange for an honest review.

Review by Linda Sattgast

AdoramaPix printed a 62 page scrapbook album for me. Here are my thoughts:

Ease of Website Use: Excellent (once I figured out the ropes). I initially chose the “Blank–Build Your Own Book” option, which wasn’t easy to use for pre-made digital pages. However, once I discovered the “Pre-Constructed (Pages)” template in their pre-made design options, I quickly zipped through creating my book. I contacted Customer Service a few times during this process, and they were always courteous and quick to help. They gave me a link to a web page where I could download PSD cover templates, which was very helpful.

How The Book Turned Out

The book came beautifully packaged. I ordered a keepsake box in addition to the book, and that made a very elegant presentation.

The ribbon is elastic (easy to get on and off) and it looks so cute!

Since presentation is often a big part of the initial impression of a gift, I appreciated the obvious care that AdoramaPix put into its packaging.

Flat Pages

AdoramaPix prides itself, and rightly so, on its style of binding that allows your pages to lie flat. Since I knew this was the case, I redid six spreads to remove the work-arounds I had made for non-flat printed books. Notice how the alphabet ribbon doesn’t get swallowed by the gutter (the center of the book that goes into the binding).

flat binding

I loved the flat binding. Here’s another example of elements that look great, even though they’re crossing the gutter.

flat binding

Binding

The book is thicker than books I’ve purchased elsewhere. This is due to the extra sturdy pages. It’s hard to describe, but the pages almost feel silky when you touch them.

photo book

I gave the book to my mother. It’s the story of her life from birth to just before she met my father. My father is gone now, but I’m so grateful that my mother, at 87, is still able to tell me family heritage stories. (By the way, she LOVED the book!)

My mother

My Impressions of AdoramaPix.com

I’m extremely happy with the quality of my book and would recommend AdoramaPix without hesitation. The photo quality is the best I’ve ever seen (these pictures don’t do them justice), and I love the flat binding!

photo book closeup

The only thing less than perfect was a slightly off center cover, since I didn’t understand how to position it, but it wasn’t enough of a problem to make me want to reprint the book.

The price point at AdoramaPix is a little spendier than I’m used to, but for the right photo books, it might be worth the extra cost. A wedding book, graduation book, or family history album comes to mind.

The flat pages are also perfect for panorama photos, which I take frequently using the pano feature of my iPhone. I can just see the photos of my time in the desert (think sunsets and sweeping mountaintop vistas) on double page spreads with no gutter!

AdoramaPix says their mission is “to provide high quality products and excellent service at an affordable price.” They also say they want to exceed customer expectations. In my experience, they did just that.

I would like to print a book about all the cakes I’ve made over the years. I made all the birthday cakes in the family (my children, all my nieces and nephews, my siblings, my parents). I also made their wedding cakes when they got marred. And I made cakes for the church when they were having something special going on. For instance, for one themed party I made a 22″x32″ sheet cake with a donkey and cactus on it.

I’ve had 4 books printed in the past.

My daughter’s wedding. Right after they wed, they moved to GA. The pictures were given to her on a CD unlike back when I got married and all the pictures were presented to me in an album. The pictures are so beautiful, capturing her joy like no other picture ever taken of her. We miss each other terribly. And since she is working to put her husband through school she doesn’t have the time to make one herself.

If I could create a photo book about ONE topic, it would be about my husbands time in the US Navy. This month (May 2015) we were invited to a ceremony in Mayport, FL for the decommissioning of his navy ship, the USS Taylor-FFG50. He was one of the original “plank owners” who launched 30 years ago, back in 1985. It was a very touching ceremony and a book would be a great keepsake to hand down to our daughter about her father.

St. Louis celebrated the 250th anniversary of its founding last year, and part of the celebration was the Cakeway to the West, 250+ four foot tall fiberglass birthday cakes decorated by artists placed at historical, cultural, educational, etc. locations throughout the area (and beyond). My husband and I went out a day or two a week for about 8 months in search of cakes, seeing neighborhoods I’ve driven through all my life but never paid attention to, learning things I never knew (there was a Revolutionary War battle here!), and visiting some places I’ve never been. Tremendous fun, and I have over 4000 pictures of the cakes and surrounding areas. I’d love to do an album on this, and winning would encourage me to “get ‘er done!”

This looks wonderful! I especially like the way the books lie flat. I have bookmarked the Adorama website for my scrapbook projects.

I would honestly like to do a scrapbook about myself. I am the family genealogist and have 50 years of research on everyone in the family – more than 22,000 people – but I have never recorded stories and photos of who I am and what my life has been like. Thus, I have all this genealogy, but no real explanation of the person is who put it all together (me) for future generations to read. It is a scrapbooking project I have had in the back of my mind for years!

I was really excited when I saw this. I took Linda’s class, “Your Story. Brilliant” a few years ago. It was an amazing experience as I spent many hours scrapbooking my life story. Six months ago I started struggling with some major health issues. Unfortunately, I have been diagnosed with Cancer. After undergoing surgery, I am presently in chemotherapy for the next 6 months. It will be an ongoing battle for the next few years, one that will require a lot of endurance. Unfortunately, my physicians say that statistically, my prospects may be limited but I will not give up hope. I am very grateful that I was able to complete the major portion of my life story a few years ago when I still had energy to do so. I would love to finish the last few pages of my story and have it printed for my family. Thank you.

I want to focus on the person behind the camera–who took this shot and why in our family history. For years I was the one behind the camera and my daughter had to do a school project with photos of her family and ended up drawing a picture of me. She said, “It looks like I don’t have a mother!” I realize my mistake now, and often the same mistake of family photos in our family history. Who wasn’t in the picture? Were they the photographer? It is a mystery to be solved with every photograph and it adds depth to the meaning of each.

My father passed away 3 years ago and I still miss him dearly every single day. Before he passed away we were working on digitizing and identifying all of his family negatives. He had no photos just negatives. After investing in a high quality scanner we managed to scan about 1100 negatives. I would scan them, my dad would identify them and write down what he knew about each photo; i.e. who, what, when, where, etc. I really enjoyed this time spent with dad and would now like to put these photos into a book format. I know that when looking thru the photos I remember my dad and I sitting there talking about the photos and the stories that went with them. This would be a wonderful keepsake for me of the last year of my dad’s life. I think it would also be nice to make additional books to share with my dad’s family.

Due to my interest in photography and literature (including poetry) I would love to create a book with pictures of my family, going back to 1895, when my grandparents got married. My mother was the fourth of five children and when she was three years old, her parents passed away, two weeks apart. We have some photos (portraits) of the grandparents and many photos of my mother’s very interesting life. The pages would have quotes from my mother and father and from some of our favourite books, poetry and maybe some from movies. I would also include some of the photos that I have taken that are pretty good, thanks to people like Linda Sattgast. I am 67 years old so I better get busy and the photo book would sure motivate me. Thank you

He suffered a major stroke last year and doesn’t get around much due to all the care required. It’s times like this that make us realize just how quickly life can be taken away.

This looks like a beautiful way to create and share a family history keepsake. Cousins and other family members on both sides of the family are coming to me to discover their family history and stories. Over the years I’ve collected many family history documents, stories, photos and sketches which I’m excited to compile into a nice quality, beautifully bound book. I’m happy to see there is room for text with the pictures. It is important for me to combine the text with artwork and to label the historical photos. Love the flat double page layouts. The first installment will be about the contrast and choice to leave the homeland and come to America; how we settled in the frontier; and our roles in American history from 1730 to the civil war. No time like the present to share and pass this information and artwork along while my health still allows me to. Looking forward to trying this product.

If I could create a photo book about ONE topic it would be a memory book for my parents who celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. Their dating years through the highlights of their many years together. It has been a dream of mine for many years to put my many scrapbook pages into a hardbound book. Thanks for the chance to win one. Your own special memory book looks lovely. Thanks for sharing it with us. So glad your Mom liked it!

If I were to create an album, I would create an album about myself. Not because I am narcissistic or anything, actually far from it. Recently I was flipping through many of my albums, and I realized, there were maybe a total of 10 photos of myself. I spend so much time behind the camera, I never end up scrapping about myself. I think it would be something great for my kids to have. They’re almost all grown up and it would be something I could give to them about our stories, but focusing on my thoughts and YES actually putting photos of ME in the album! Thank you for this chance!!!

I would create a photo book about my son’s life-changing 2.5-year experience as a Peace Corps volunteer in Turkmenistan, Central Asia, and my husband’s and my brief visit with him, the people and places there. A place not often seen by many, Turkmenistan is now closed to the Peace Corps. I’d like to get the images in print so he has a beautiful remembrance, as well as presentation to share this unique place and experience with others.

I would like to tell the story of my husband’s family who grew up in England. My father in law went to a boarding school for underprivileged children when his Dad died leaving his mother a widow with 6 children. He served in WWII for the English and later emigrated to America with his wife and 2 sons. My husband’s mom lived through the terrible air raids and spent many nights in the bomb shelter in her backyard. She loved and missed her family in England very much after moving to America and instilled in my husband a love for her family that was so far away. We visit our relatives there every few years and hear many stories about that era which I would love to document so they are not forgotten

I really want to create a book for each of my married daughters. I have been sorting out their “lives” from their left behind shoe boxes of treasures and I see that most could be scanned and scrapped. Thanks for the critique of the new printing company too. I need to find a new source for the books I’ll create!

I would love to have a book printed of my granddaughter’s life thus far. We moved so that I could babysit her, and now her brother, and I’ve been having so much fun photographing all of the big and little events. I had one book printed and was so disappointed when the pages (which were sized properly for the book) had huge white borders around them. This book looks amazing!

If I win the Adorama book I will make a book on my daughter’s wedding. I used Adorama for the first time to make a book on her engagement. Like you, I found the process a bit difficult at first, but after a bit Iof a learning curve and help from Adorama, the book turned out great!

My mother turns 100 on August 4 this year. She has been part of an amazing century and as Australia is only a little more than 200 years as a nation, is one of the pioneers of our country, and has wonderful yarns she shares with children grandchildren and now great grandchildren. I would enjoy presenting her with her stories illustrated.

Wow!! The photo book looks wonderful! I would love to create a book about our grandson. He is such a treasure!! We don’t see him very often because he lives so far away. He will be two in June, and I think a book full of pictures of him, and showing his cleverness and joie de vivre would be amazing! He is a darling!

Memorial day is a time for remembering the sacrifices made by the men and women in the military and their families. My book will be about the men and women in my family that have chosen to protect and serve! God Bless America and the men and women that gave the ultimate sacrifice to keep our country free!
