Serendipity

I have a new favorite word: serendipity!

For some time now my daughter has been threatening to go through all my cupboards and throw out everything that’s obsolete. She started in January, and the first cupboard she chose was filled with, amongst other things, my old recordings from my days as a professional folk singer.

She said, “Mum, I think we need to get all these old songs put onto a CD so we can listen to them.” So, she took them home with her.

Practically the next day I received word that a man—a vinyl record historian and researcher—was trying to contact me. He even traveled to the town where I grew up to see if he could find someone who knew me. Little did I know that he wanted to remaster and re-release my first record from 1971 on his own record label. He also wanted all the old photos, newspaper clippings, and ephemera I have from those days.

You could have knocked me over with a feather. Apparently, everything old is new again!

Sometimes it takes another person to help you realize the value of what you have. If he wasn’t a record producer, you’d be forgiven for assuming he was a scrapbooker.

So, I guess the moral of the story is to not throw anything out, because the moment you do, someone else will want it. Our history is important.

I bet you’re all thinking now about what might be lurking in your cupboards! See what I mean about serendipity?

How awesome is that? I traveled and sang as a gospel soloist for almost 10 years. That was several years ago and your story flooded my mind with all the great memories. Thanks for sharing. Love the scrapbook page too. 🙂

What a great story! I definitely want to know when it comes out so I can get a copy.

I need to clean out some old boxes so this is timely advice – to be careful about what you throw out.

Thanks for asking, Jenifer. I’m not sure how long it will take but it’s still in the early stages of production. I will be sure to make an announcement when it comes out. It’ll be in both vinyl record and digital format.
