Instant Teardrops

Instant Teardrops
by Jen White

What can I say? I’m a happy girl. It takes a lot for me to conjure up even a single tear drop.

With Photoshop Elements, however, anyone can conjure up a teardrop in a matter of seconds. And better yet, these teardrops come without the runny nose and swollen eyes!

Follow along with me as I take a small round embellishment and turn it into the shape of a teardrop to be used as a drop of rain, a flower petal, or even a tear of sadness.

Step One: Prepare the Workspace

This tip will work well with any small round embellishment, such as a gem, a sequin, or even a button.

  • Create a new 12 x 12 inch document (File > New > Blank File) at 300 ppi with a white background. (Photoshop: Choose File > New.) Or, open an existing scrapbook page (File > Open) and, in the Layers panel, activate the top layer.
  • Open a small round embellishment. I am using one of the gems from Taking Time to Relax by Eva Kipler.
  • Get the Move tool.
  • On the document, click on the embellishment and drag it onto the scrapbook page.

Step Two: Get the Pucker Tool

  • In the Layers panel, make sure the embellishment layer is the active layer.
  • In the Menu Bar, choose Filter > Distort > Liquify.
  • In the dialog box, click on the Pucker tool icon. Click on the Zoom icon to zoom way in to your embellishment. Set the Brush Size to about two times the size of the embellishment. I used a Brush Size of 150.

Note: To increase the Brush Size with your cursor is over the embellishment, press the Right Bracket key.

Step Three: Create a Little Pucker

  • Hover the cross hairs of your cursor over the top edge of the embellishment. Click and drag upward slightly to create a teardrop shape.
  • If you need a redo, press Ctrl Z (Mac: Cmd Z).
  • Click OK to commit the changes.
